Must Read! For all of you out there who have a special place in your heart for Maine hunting and fishing memories, I believe that you'd really like this book. I grew up in the Maine outdoors and Tom brings back many memories of "old timers" and trips from years gone by. Maine, named appropriately as God's country, is a very unique and special state that has left its mark in many of those who were born here. Tom really brings this out in a profound way through his stories and remarkable drawings!

A Wonderful Photographic HistoryIts hard to imagine that our traditional, yet modern New England town once looked like the photographs in this wonderful book. From the covered bridge across the river, to the horse-and-buggy transportation, the photos capture the magic of Hanover over a period of more than 100 years. Anyone who loves Hanover will absolutely love this book.

"The Heart and Stomach of a King": Elizabeth I and the Politics of Sex and Power (New Cultural Studies)
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (July, 1994)
Average review score:

If you like history . . .I had to read this book for a college history class I took. It was good and interesting reading for something that was required. Even if you don't have to read this book for your Tudor/Stuart History class, take some time out and read it! You'll definitely be rewarded with a great sense of history and accomplishment.

The Heart of the Commonwealth : Society and Political Culture in Worcester County, Massachusetts, 1713-1861
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (March, 1990)
Average review score:

Early American History at its BestJohn Brooke's HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH is an amazing book. Specifically, it is about Worchester County, Massachusetts in the years 1713- 1861. Anyone interested in early Massachusetts history simply must read this book.
But HEART is much more than that. Brooke's book is what historians call a microhistory, a study of a small place that, because it is so attentive to detail, is able to shed light on American History as a whole. HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH does this, explaining how different political ideologies in the years after Queen Annes War developed into the ideas of Republicanism and Liberalism that are so much discussed by historians in the acadamy today.
Whether interested in Massachusetts, politics, society, or any aspect of early American life, HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH is a book worth reading. It belongs on the self of everyone interested in the story of America.

Henry Vi, Parts I, Ii, and III: With New Dramatic Criticism and an Updated Bibliography
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Signet Classic (May, 1993)
Average review score:

The Lesser Known ShakespeareI don't understand why more people don't read Shakespeare's history plays because they are some of his best work, especially the Henry VI trilogy. Shakespeare's interpretation and manipulation of history drive this trilogy forward and create unique opportunities to judge his skill against the "facts." I loved this trilogy! Not only is it an expert study in human nature (which is Shakespeare's trademark), it is action-packed with never a boring moment. Read it!

Here and Nowhere Else: Late Seasons of a Farm and Its Family
Published in Hardcover by Beacon Press (June, 1995)
Average review score:

Here and Nowhere ElseHere and Nowhere Else captures with its perfect language the timeless undulations of rural living. It is not so much like reading a book as it is like walking the land with someone who respects both the comfort and the pain it can give. A truthful recording of enormous loss and a lyric epitaph for a family farm.

Hiking Guide to Mount Washington & the Presidential Range, 6th
Published in Paperback by Appalachian Mountain Club Books (October, 1998)
Average review score:

One of the best guides aroundThis book is excellent for anyone who likes to hike in new hampshire, but likes to stick to the presidentials. It's informative, compact and an essentail edition to any hikers pack. It comes with a map of the range, too. Now is a great time to buy because the AMC maps have just been given a make-over. They are now full colorized and eaiser to read. A very cool feature with the map is that it has an iset of Mount Washington from the hermit lake shelter to the summit. All in all, a wonderful book.

Hiking New Hampshire
Published in Digital by Falcon Publishing ()
Average review score:

Hiking New Hampshire: A Welcome Guide for NH HikersThis is a fine book, with much to offer the novice and dedicated hiker alike. Pletcher's work offers guidance for hiking throughout the state of NH. He has somehow managed to narrow his analysis to 100 fine hikes, which promise adventure into all levels of hiking. While it in no way matches the depth of pure trail knowledge one finds in the AMC guide, it instead offers unique, intimate and eloquent analysis of 100 hikes. Each hike is highlighted with its own map, as well as a chart to graph elevation gains. Also, each trail's difficulty and length are assessed and special attractions unique to the hike are noted. Pletcher is clearly proficient in his knowledge of these trails and, more importantly, adept at putting that knowledge into compact summaries for the benefit of would-be hikers. A must addition to one's hiking library. Ernest M. Berube
